Using The Student Workbook And, Videos:
The main goal of the Signing Naturally materials is to engage you in conversations utilizing appropriate cultural behaviors. Since the classroom experience may be limited to a few hours a week, the student materials are developed to supplement classroom learning and provide further practice. The video materials model the vocabulary, sentences, conversations, and narratives to be learned and the printed materials provide explanations, readings, and resources. All with one goal in mind, to help you achieve meaningful interactions within the Deaf community.
WORKBOOK
Most homework is driven by the language presented in the video. The workbook provides instruction on how to work with the video materials to complete the homework activities. Homework activities have the following focuses:
Conversational homework activities focus on reviewing and practicing key vocabulary, phrases, and grammar structures through conversations. Pay special attention to the section called Learn the Dialogue which highlights the key language phrases and structures introduced in class.
Skill-building homework activities focus on practicing specific language elements such as numbers, finger spelling, semantics, spatial and verb agreement, translating sentences, and negation.
Comprehension homework activities focus on strengthening and expanding the ability to understand what is signed by figuring out the meaning from context.
Production homework activities focus on developing signing fluency through narrating or storytelling. The section called Learn the narrative highlights the key language phrases and structures to be incorporated in the presentation.
Culture homework activities focus on helping you develop a better understanding of appropriate cultural behaviors through reading, exercises, and analysis.
Sections In The Workbook You Should Pay Attention To:
Assignment
At end of some homework, there is a section called Assignment, in which you are asked to develop or rehearse something for the next class. It is important you take the time to complete these assignments. These activities are designed to help you develop greater facility with the targeted language elements.
Vocabulary Review
At the end of the homework, there is a vocabulary Review that lists all the key vocabulary introduced in class. Printed video captures of the signs are numbered to correspond to the signs on video. The meaning of the signs is given by using pictures or written definitions.
New Vocabulary
In some mini dialogues or narratives, under the heading New Signs, captures of new sign(s) from the video are shown along with their definitions. Learning these signs provides a good opportunity to expand your vocabulary.
Self-Assessment
At the end of each unit, there is a Self-Assessment. Fill out the form thoughtfully as it will pinpoint areas where you need more practice. If you rate yourself with a 3 or below in any part of the assessment, you should formulate a plan of action to strengthen that particular skill. After a month, assess yourself again. Continue in this manner until you can honestly rate yourself with 4 or better in all areas.

This is a pretty good book. Was required for my course. It is often difficult to learn moving signs from the book because it can’t show movement on paper. I’m sure the disks work, but I don’t have a DVD player we provide all videos in mp4 format, I stream everything.
It is a good workbook and used intensely in class. This one is different and better than the “Vista” version of the same title. I bought both trying to get the most affordable book for college and many textbook search engines seemed to get the two confused.
This one has a lot more information and student user friendly. You are probably only going to buy this if required for a class. I believe it to be a good value with the content and DVDs. I am glad to have purchased new. I usually rent or buy textbooks used.

Since the end of on-campus, in-person, classes, I am “teaching” myself via Signing Naturally Student Workbook Units 7-12 eBook & DVDs eBook. It would help immensely if there were a COMPLETE answer key. I’m learning slowly. The videos are very helpful. The only thing missing (other than a real teacher!) is the answer key
